These obstacles would be especially daunting if the victim were closeted and fearful of the publicity generated should the case be reported in the media. After the repeal of Section 377A in 2022, the current factors include the immense amount of discrimination which homosexuals face in Singaporean society and the misconception that a man who allows himself to be raped is probably weak, passive and effeminate. The onus was on victims not only to provide evidence that the rape occurred but also that they did not consent to the activity. One important reason used to be that Section 377A of the Penal Code criminalised consensual male gay sex even when partaken of in private. Victims are not charged.ĭespite this, victims of male rape are still reluctant to report the crime to the police. Perpetrators are charged under Section 375 (1A) of the Penal Code. Male-on-male rape, as well as the rape of men by women, only became criminal offences in Singapore with effect from 1 January 2020.
